The New Politics of Old Age Policy
As the aged and aging population of the United States continues to grow, political, civic and intellectual leaders have engaged more frequently and forcefully in examining and debating age-related policies. Are the policies now in place still relevant and appropriate, and will they continue to serve the needs of our society with the advent of a larger, and qualitatively different, elderly population? If not, how do we go about accommodating this unprecedented demographic? Demographic, economic and political trends have challenged conventional understandings of older people and their role in public policy.

The New Politics of Old Age Policy, edited by the Chair of the Department of Social Welfare Policy at Boston University's School of Social Work, looks at these issues from various perspectives, with contributions from eighteen academic and consulting experts in the field. Chapters address theoretical approaches to age-based policy, with attention to recent data and how it backs up or weakens the theories behind the policies. In particular, these voices weigh the validity of chronological age as a basis on which to judge government program eligibility.Treating retirement-age individuals as though all are equally reliant on the Federal Reserve, for example, is inefficient at best: studies show that people over 65+ will, in future, be more likely to be working, and generalizing about the financial resources of retirement-age individuals in terms of their personal savings is impossible.

Diversity of all kinds is, in fact, greater among today's U.S. seniors than any previous mature population, and on the rise. The book scrutinizes what diversity and various aspects of population dynamics mean for age-related policy and its application. Hot-button issues surrounding Social Security and Medicare also get ample air time. On a national, state, and local level, the political context of public assistance policies is interrogated.

This book could hardly be more timely. The Social Security question remains a dominant presence in the headlines and on political talk shows. Business interests increasingly are settling into the task of developing their senior-targeted approaches. Old age is changing: what will this mean for tomorrow's policy-makers? From the federal to the community level, concepts must be re-considered. Those no longer relevant must be discarded, and new ones must be developed with a sense of vision and direction. The New Politics orients us to this essential task.
