Boomer Nation: The Largest and Richest Generation Ever, and How it Changed America
The baby boomer generation defined the ‘60s in our nation. Here, the views of six prominent, individual boomers open up a broad view of the generation and its impact on today'sAmerica
.

Almost from the time its first members entered the world back in 1946, the baby boomer generation has meant change for the United States
. Great in number, open in attitude, trailblazing in nature, baby boomers as a generation have questioned, challenged and reconfigured society and economy every step of the way. Their considerable wealth has made them a lucrative market that business bends over backwards to connect with.
In this illuminating and informative book Steve Gillon, historian and host of the History Channel's History Center, traces the lives of six individual baby boomers to produce a broad picture of the generation's culture. Gillon's thesis holds that this culture has in fact become synonymous with that of America
itself, so influential was the baby boomer generation. His subjects are prominent figures: Bobby Muller, founder of the Vietnam Veterans of America; Marshall Herskovitz, who developed the defining baby boomer show, Thirtysomething; cancer survivor Fran Visco, who served as president of the National Breast Cancer Coalition; Elizabeth Plater-Zyberk, an architect who created the avant-garde Florida community of Seaside; Donny Deutsch, a self-made advertising mogul with his own cable television program, and Alberta Wilson, a Christian educator who overcame poverty and addiction. Their varying perspectives make a multi-faceted look at the Vietnam War, women's liberation and the rise of fundamentalist relegion.
Through the course of the book it becomes clear that the dynamics effected by the baby boomer generation continue strikingly today. From the Kennedy assassination to Woodstock
, he touches on all the biggest shapers of the baby boomer era with an analytical rather than nostalgic eye. The result is a thought-provoking investigation that argues persuasively for a continuity between the baby boomer and "X" generations. He contends that boomers have not changed in terms of their fundamental core values, but adapted these according to new life stages encountered.
Gillon's study is a compelling read for general audiences, but also an excellent tool for business and marketing professionals who want a deep and intellectually keen understanding of the baby boomer generation and the market segment they represent. It's also sure to provide ample food for thought about the ways subsequent generations reflect the characteristics of the watershed boomers.
